President Celebrates India-Mauritius Bond at Mahatma Gandhi Institute

The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, embarked on a significant visit to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka, Mauritius, on March 12, 2024. The MGI, established in 1970 through a collaborative effort between the Governments of India and Mauritius, stands as a beacon of Indian arts, culture, and language in the island nation.

During her visit, President Murmu paid homage to the father of the Indian nation, Mahatma Gandhi, by laying floral tributes at his statue adorning the institute’s campus. Addressing an enthusiastic audience, she commended the remarkable achievements of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius, citing it as a source of pride for both India and the global Indian community.

Highlighting the enduring partnership between India and Mauritius, President Murmu emphasized India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius’ development journey and improving the quality of life for its citizens. She lauded the decades-long collaboration between the two nations as a testament to India’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial ties with its international partners.

President Murmu urged the Mahatma Gandhi Institute to expand its efforts in providing opportunities for Mauritian youth to engage with India across various spheres, including culture, language, education, and business. She emphasized the importance of nurturing cultural exchanges and educational initiatives to strengthen the bond between the two countries further.

In a significant announcement, President Murmu extended the eligibility of Overseas Indian Citizenship to Indian-origin Mauritians up to the 7th generation. This decision aims to facilitate a deeper connection between young Mauritians and their ancestral homeland, fostering a sense of belonging and heritage among the diaspora.

During her tour of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, President Murmu explored the institution’s rich archival collection, which chronicles the historical journey of the first Indian indentured laborers to Mauritius. These archival records serve as a testament to the shared history and cultural heritage of the two nations.

President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to the Mahatma Gandhi Institute underscores the enduring bond between India and Mauritius, rooted in shared values, culture, and history. It reaffirms India’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Mauritius and fostering closer ties between the two nations for the benefit of their people.
