President Droupadi Murmu Addresses 2nd Convocation at IIIT Lucknow

Lucknow, December 12, 2023 — The 2nd convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Lucknow, witnessed the distinguished presence and address of the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu. Her speech focused on the transformative power of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), in shaping India’s future. The President highlighted the nation’s progress, emphasizing the 5 Ds – Demand, Demography, Democracy, Desire, and Dream, that are propelling India towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2030.

“Addressing the graduating students, President Murmu articulated the responsibilities entrusted to the youth, emphasizing their role as partners in realizing India’s vision of becoming a developed country by 2047. She underscored the inevitability of change, marking the onset of the 4th Industrial Revolution, where AI and Machine Learning play pivotal roles in revolutionizing various sectors”.

President Murmu applauded India’s global standing in the technological landscape, citing its emergence as a hub for AI, machine learning, the Internet of Things, and blockchain. However, she cautioned against overlooking the ethical challenges accompanying technological advancements, stressing the importance of addressing issues such as employment concerns, economic inequality, and human biases resulting from AI applications.

The President urged a holistic approach, blending ‘Emotional Intelligence’ with ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ ensuring that the latter serves as a means to enhance the quality of human life. She encouraged the academic community to focus on solutions that benefit every stratum of society.

“Expressing her satisfaction with IIIT Lucknow’s elevation to the status of Institute of National Importance, President Murmu commended the institution’s capabilities and efficiency. She anticipated that this recognition would inspire IIIT Lucknow to set new benchmarks in education and excellence”.

President Murmu lauded the institution’s initiative to offer education in regional languages, considering it a positive step in overcoming linguistic barriers. She also praised the establishment of the Incubation Center C.R.E.A.T.E., recognizing its contribution to making research and development tangible for society.

President Murmu commended IIIT Lucknow’s commitment to addressing societal and industrial challenges, ensuring that students are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the times. The convocation ceremony marked not just the culmination of academic endeavors but the commencement of a journey where the graduating students are poised to contribute significantly to India’s technological and economic landscape.
