In a momentous event, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Surajkund, Haryana on February 2, 2024. The President emphasized that the Mela serves as a celebration of cultural diversity, blending tradition and innovation while providing a vital platform for craftsmen to connect with art enthusiasts.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu highlighted the universal nature of art and craft, stating that they transcend borders and construct bridges of understanding. She praised the creative endeavors of artists and craftspeople, referring to them as creative ambassadors of humanity. Gujarat, the partner state for this year’s Mela, was commended for its rich art tradition. The President expressed satisfaction with the North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation being the cultural partner for this edition.
Appreciating the role of artisans in preserving the country’s artistic heritage, President Murmu acknowledged their contributions across various mediums. From sculptors breathing life into clay and stone to painters using vibrant colors to weavers creating intricate beauty in textiles, craftsmen were hailed as both creators and protectors of India’s civilization and culture.
President Murmu also lauded the artisan community for carrying forward the precious heritage of Indian civilization. She noted the significance of this year’s partner nation, Tanzania, stating that it provides a wonderful platform to showcase Tanzanian dance, music, and cuisine, reflecting the enduring influence of Indian culture on the East African coast. The President highlighted Tanzania’s participation as a partner nation, emphasizing India’s engagement with the African Union.
