In a significant step towards digital transformation, President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the ‘National e-Vidhan Application’ (NeVA) during her address to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in Gandhinagar on September 13, 2023. The President commended the assembly’s historical contributions to society since the formation of Gujarat state in 1960 and highlighted the positive impact of various commendable initiatives taken by the assembly over the years.
A Digital Transformation
President Murmu emphasized that the inauguration of the E-Assembly marks a pivotal moment in the journey of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, as it transitions into a Digital House. NeVA will enable members of the assembly to learn and adopt best practices from the Parliament and other Legislative Assemblies across the country. The President expressed her confidence that this initiative, guided by the vision of “one nation, one application,” would enhance the speed and transparency of the assembly’s functioning. Additionally, the move towards a paperless house would contribute to environmental conservation.
Gujarat’s Remarkable Achievements
The President acknowledged Gujarat’s remarkable achievements on various fronts. The state is a leading manufacturing hub, the largest milk-producing state, and a prominent player in the Startup ecosystem. It has also made significant strides in Roof-Top Solar Power Generation and Wind Energy Production.
Human Resources and Development
Highlighting the importance of human resources in economic progress, President Murmu stressed the need for basic facilities such as a robust healthcare system, quality education, and reliable access to electricity and water. She commended the government of Gujarat for its focus on these critical aspects. The President noted remarkable improvements in girls education, teacher-student ratios, enrollment rates, and retention rates due to the government’s efforts. She also praised the state’s three-tier health system, which has contributed to lower maternal and infant mortality rates. Additionally, she recognized Gujarat’s achievements in electricity reform, water harvesting, and supply, as well as its initiatives for animal welfare.
Women’s Representation in Politics
Addressing the issue of women’s representation in politics, President Murmu emphasized that as women excel in various fields such as science, technology, defense, and sports, their representation in politics should also increase. She observed the aspirations of young girls during her visits to educational institutions and emphasized that when women are given proper opportunities, they can significantly contribute to nation-building.
Global Biofuels Alliance
The President highlighted the formation of the Global Biofuels Alliance during the G20 Summit, led by India. This alliance reflects India’s commitment to environmental protection and energy self-reliance, offering opportunities for states like Gujarat to explore innovative and non-traditional energy sources.
A Vision for the Future
Concluding her address, President Murmu emphasized the importance of technology in simplifying people’s lives and noted that E-Vidhan would help MLAs stay connected with the people while maintaining parliamentary decorum. She expressed her hope that the assembly would set a new standard for discussing public welfare and contribute not only to Gujarat’s prosperity but also to India’s journey towards becoming a fully developed nation by 2047.
