The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, took a significant stride in the battle against drug abuse by launching the ‘My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal’ Campaign. This initiative falls under the overarching umbrella of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ and was meticulously organized by the Brahma Kumaris at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata, on August 17, 2023.
In her address during the launch, President Murmu emphasized the gravity of drug abuse as a pressing concern for both society and the nation. She noted that addiction steers the youth away from the path of self-discovery and growth, prompting an urgent need to address the issue from all angles. The President acknowledged the multifaceted approach required to combat this challenge, ranging from spiritual awakening and medication to social cohesion and political determination.
The President commended organizations like Brahma Kumaris for their active engagement in discussing and tackling such critical issues. She asserted that addiction often spawns from mental stress and peer pressure, leading to detrimental effects on health and catalyzing other disorders. Beyond the individual, the President acknowledged the profound impact addiction has on the families and friends of those afflicted.
“Urging collective responsibility, President Murmu encouraged youth to alert the families of addicted friends, thereby fostering a supportive environment for intervention. She offered a compassionate message to those ensnared by drug consumption, advising them not to surrender their lives to addiction. Instead, she encouraged seeking help from friends, family, or social organizations when dealing with stress or challenges. The President firmly believes that with willpower, no obstacle is insurmountable”.
President Murmu underscored the dark underbelly of addiction, revealing how it’s exploited by anti-social elements to further criminal activities. The financial drain of drug purchases often fuels such nefarious endeavors, exacerbating social ills. However, the President expressed her unwavering confidence that individuals gripped by addiction can break free from its grasp, thereby contributing to their well-being, society, and the nation.
“Recognizing the youth as a nation’s most precious resource, President Murmu stressed the significance of channeling their energy and potential towards constructive pursuits. Educational institutions, she emphasized, play a pivotal role in identifying any deviations from the right path and must act swiftly to redirect students toward a brighter future”.
