The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, was called on today (December 7, 2022) by officer trainees of the Indian Police Service, Indian Postal Service, Indian Railway Accounts Service and Indian Revenue Service and officers of the Indian Radio Regulatory Service.

“You have been selected for the positions carrying the highest responsibility,” the President said to the officers. The governance system has a lot of confidence in its ability to carry out policies of national importance and thereby shape the future of the people.

A citizen-centric approach should be followed while taking decisions in respective services. She told them to be aware of their goals and actions. The goals and aims of individuals should be aligned with the broader goals of the nation.

This is the era of technology, said the President. The field of administration and governance has immense scope for innovation. Technology can help make governance more effective, speedy, transparent, and people-oriented.

The President said that the Officer Trainees of the Indian Revenue Service must remember that their twin role is to facilitate the compliance of tax laws by taxpayers and also contribute to overall credible deterrence against tax evasion. The way we communicate with taxpayers should be more respectful, and we should try to move the system toward voluntary compliance.

“The Faceless Assessment Scheme of the Government of India is aimed at bringing more transparency to governance,” she said. She told them to get to know the new, faceless environment.

The President concluded by advising Officers to keep the interests of the poorest of the poor in mind. She said that as public policy is a tool for social justice, public servants are the agents of social change. She added that they have chosen public service as their career and are therefore always here to serve the nation.
