The two-day Conference of Governors concluded at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 3, 2024, with President Droupadi Murmu lauding the Governors’ collective efforts for engaging in comprehensive discussions. In her closing remarks, she appreciated the valuable ideas and suggestions put forth by various groups of Governors aimed at improving their offices’ functioning and promoting people’s welfare. President Murmu expressed confidence that these suggestions would be implemented effectively.
Presentations and Future Roadmap
On the second day of the conference, six groups of Governors made presentations based on their deliberations, outlining a future roadmap. These presentations were delivered in the presence of President Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Vice President Dhankhar emphasized the significance of the detailed discussions, urging Governors to maintain sustained communication with state governments for effective functioning.
Prime Minister’s Address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Governors to evolve an ideal model of governance in Raj Bhavans, emphasizing the need for staff training and the embrace of technology for effective functioning. He also called for leveraging alumni networks to create drug-free educational campuses and encouraged the adoption of natural farming practices, as suggested by Gujarat’s Governor Acharya Devvrat, to make Raj Bhavans free of chemicals. The Prime Minister stressed that Raj Bhavans should serve as sources of motivation and inspiration.
Focus on Inclusive Development
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the Governors’ efforts and assured that actionable points would be taken up to enhance the effectiveness of the Governors and Raj Bhavans. President Murmu highlighted the importance of inclusive and accelerated development of states, urging Governors to ensure that the benefits of public welfare programs reach every eligible citizen. She also emphasized women’s participation and empowerment, particularly through self-help groups and women-led start-ups.
President Murmu underscored the need for proper utilization of resources for tribal communities’ welfare and encouraged Governors to prioritize this. She also advocated for the Raj Bhavans to reflect Indian ethos and increase public engagement through social and cultural events. Highlighting the global appreciation for India’s digital initiatives, she urged the use of digital mediums in Raj Bhavans’ functioning and organizing seminars on cyber security and technological innovation.
Promoting Cooperative Federalism
President Murmu stressed the importance of the smooth functioning of institutions for public welfare and overall development, advocating for better coordination among various institutions. As the link between the Centre and the States in India’s federal system, Governors play a crucial role in promoting cooperative federalism. The President expressed confidence that mutual coordination of central institutions would be enhanced as per the Governors’ suggestions.
In her closing remarks, President Murmu stated that Governors are responsible for setting an ideal example for citizens, guiding people through their exemplary actions in important areas.
