On August 19, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu met with the Officer Trainees of the Indian Foreign Service (2023 Batch) at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The President delivered an insightful address on the significance of their roles.
Foreign Policy as a Domestic Extension
President Murmu emphasized that foreign policy is an extension of domestic policies, crucial for securing political, economic, and security interests. IFS officers are tasked with shaping global agendas to achieve India’s goal of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
Representation Beyond the Government
The President highlighted that IFS officers represent not just the Government of India but 1.4 billion Indians and their diverse aspirations. They embody India’s rich civilization and cultural heritage, which places a substantial responsibility on their shoulders.
Indian Foreign Service: Skills for Effective Diplomacy
President Murmu advised the trainees on the essential skills of effective diplomacy. She stressed the importance of being effective communicators, and strategic thinkers and having a deep understanding of political and cultural dynamics. Learning foreign languages and embracing new cultures and technologies were also recommended.
Preparation for Future Challenges
As the officers prepare for their first postings and foreign language training, the President encouraged them to acquire as many languages as possible and remain adaptable to new cultures and technologies. These attributes will enhance their effectiveness and diplomacy skills.
