President Murmu Addressed Commonwealth Legal Education Association Conference

Delhi: Smt Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, honored the valedictory function of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) – Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference (CASGC) 2024 in New Delhi on February 4, 2024, delivering an address.

In her address, President Murmu underscored the pivotal role of legal professionals and the judiciary in upholding societal order, emphasizing the alignment of what is right, just, and logically sound. She noted that challenges to this order prompt lawyers, judges, law students, and teachers to strive for its restoration.

The President highlighted the multifaceted nature of justice delivery, referencing the Preamble to India’s Constitution, which includes “Justice, social, economic and political.” She urged the inclusion of environmental justice in contemporary discussions, given the global threat of climate change, acknowledging the cross-border challenges associated with this issue.

Addressing the conference theme, ‘Cross-Border Challenges in Justice Delivery,’ President Murmu commended CLEA for charting a roadmap towards a common future, transcending borders, and emphasizing natural justice principles based on equality and dignity. She expressed confidence that the Commonwealth, with its diversity and legacy, can set an example for global cooperation in addressing shared concerns.

President Murmu highlighted the sub-theme, ‘Access to Justice: Bridging the Divide,’ acknowledging the enrichment brought by deans, vice-chancellors, students, and scholars. She emphasized the flexibility and innovative potential of young minds in proposing solutions to complex problems.

Concluding her address, President Murmu emphasized India’s significance in global discourse, offering its rich democratic heritage and experience as a key stakeholder in international justice delivery. India, with its status as the world’s largest and oldest democracy, stands poised to contribute valuable insights and learning to contemporary challenges in justice delivery worldwide.
