The High Court of Orissa celebrated a momentous milestone as it completed 75 years of dedicated service to the nation. The valedictory function, graced by the esteemed presence of the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, marked an occasion of reflection, celebration, and commitment to the pursuit of justice.
In her address, President Murmu began by paying heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the Kargil War. She acknowledged that among these heroes were many from Odisha, exemplifying the state’s commitment to serving the nation. Major Padmapani Acharya, honored with the Maha Vir Chakra for his exceptional contribution, stands as a symbol of bravery and inspiration for all citizens.
Reflecting on the glorious 75-year journey of the High Court of Orissa, the President lauded its commitment to upholding high standards of justice. The court has been graced by numerous luminaries, including Justices who later ascended to the Supreme Court and even served as Chief Justice of India. President Murmu credited the court’s reputation to the unwavering dedication, loyalty, and vast knowledge of its present and past Chief Justices, Judges, advocates, and staff.
Emphasizing the necessity of adapting to change, the President acknowledged the High Court’s commendable efforts in embracing technological advancements in the justice delivery system. Through modern and innovative changes, the court has streamlined and accelerated the process, ensuring more efficient justice delivery.
As an important pillar of the world’s largest democracy, the legal profession in India holds a special place in the hearts of its citizens. The President commended the trust and respect earned by legal professionals and called upon them to work towards expeditious trials and quick justice. This, she stressed, would prevent the unnecessary languishing of innocents in jail on trivial charges and uphold the faith of victims in the legal system.
President Murmu drew attention to the alarming instances of individuals serving longer periods of imprisonment than the punishment warranted for their accused crimes. This grave concern not only robs innocent individuals of valuable years of their lives but also deprives victims of the justice they seek. Urging everyone associated with the High Court of Orissa, she called for collective efforts to ensure speedy dispensation of justice, setting an exemplary standard for the entire nation.
The President underscored the paramount importance given by our Constitution-makers to delivering justice to the socially and economically underprivileged sections of society. Acknowledging the challenges faced by these sections in accessing justice due to a lack of knowledge and resources, she called for deeper contemplation on ensuring their access to justice.
Finally, President Murmu stressed the pressing need for environmental protection in the face of natural calamities. Alongside the Executive and Legislature, the Judiciary must prioritize safeguarding the environment and wildlife, recognizing their vital role in preserving humanity’s future.
