The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, commenced a momentous five-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, underscoring the region’s strategic importance and ecological preservation efforts.
In her inaugural engagement at Port Blair, President Murmu paid homage at the Martyr’s Column, acknowledging the sacrifices of the past. She then visited the Cellular Jail Complex and Museum, immersing herself in the poignant history of the freedom struggle. Later, she witnessed the evocative light and sound show at the Cellular Jail, honoring the resilience of those who fought for independence.
“Subsequently, President Murmu participated in a civic reception hosted by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration at the Dr. BR Ambedkar Institute of Technology. Addressing the gathering, she emphasized the critical role of the islands in India’s Act East Policy, connecting the nation with South and Southeast Asia”.
The President extolled the natural beauty of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, citing its allure to global tourists. She lauded efforts to bolster tourism infrastructure, including the inauguration of a new terminal at Veer Savarkar Airport. Noting a significant surge in tourist arrivals between 2014 and 2022, President Murmu envisaged enhanced employment opportunities for local youth through sustained tourism growth.
Highlighting the maritime significance, President Murmu emphasized the Exclusive Economic Zone’s vast potential, constituting 30 percent of India’s total EEZ. She commended ongoing initiatives to boost the blue economy, particularly in promoting fish and marine product exports.
