In a heartfelt tribute, President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Sadhu Meher, an eminent Indian actor, director, and producer, who passed away on February 2, 2024, at the age of 84. Remembered for his impactful roles, Meher’s contribution to meaningful cinema earned him acclaim.
President Murmu remarked, “The demise of Sadhu Meher is a huge loss for the world of cinema. Remembered for his contribution to meaningful cinema, Sadhu Meher essayed memorable and complex characters on screen through his powerful performances.”
Meher, born in 1939 or 1940, had a versatile career spanning both Odia and Hindi films. He initially gained recognition in Hindi cinema with notable films like “Bhuvan Shome,” “Ankur,” and “Mrigaya.” Later, he transitioned to Odia films, becoming a prominent figure in the world of Parallel Cinema during the mid-1980s.
Meher’s talent extended beyond acting, as he also directed and produced films. Notable contributions include his roles in the television series “Byomkesh Bakshi,” where he portrayed characters such as Anadi Haldar and Bishupal.
Acknowledging his prowess, Sadhu Meher was honored with a National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in “Ankur.” In 2017, the Government of India conferred upon him the prestigious Padma Shri.
President Murmu conveyed her condolences, stating, “I convey my condolences to his admirers, friends, and members of his family.”
