President of India Graces Golden Jubilee Celebrations of NIMHANS in Bengaluru

The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, attended the golden jubilee celebrations of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru on January 3, 2025. She lauded the institute’s achievements in mental health and neuroscience, highlighting its innovative research, exceptional patient care, and academic excellence.

Advancements in Mental Health Care

President Murmu praised NIMHANS for pioneering initiatives like the Bellary model of community-based mental healthcare and the Tele MANAS platform, which uses technology to deliver mental health services. She noted that Tele MANAS has supported nearly 17 lakh people in their native languages over two years, marking a milestone in accessible mental healthcare.

Shifting Perspectives on Mental Health

Acknowledging the rising global awareness of mental health issues, the President commended the societal shift away from unscientific beliefs and stigma surrounding mental illnesses. She emphasized that this change has encouraged individuals to seek help and share their struggles, a crucial development in tackling the growing mental health crisis.
