Bangladesh: In a significant political milestone, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive term in the recently concluded national elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to convey his heartfelt congratulations, recognizing the historic nature of Hasina’s victory.
In his post on X, PM Modi stated, “Spoke to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and congratulated her on her victory for a historic fourth consecutive term in the Parliamentary elections.I extend my congratulations to the people of Bangladesh for the successful completion of the elections. Our commitment remains steadfast in enhancing our enduring and people-centric partnership with Bangladesh.”
The electoral triumph comes amid unique challenges, including the boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is currently serving a jail sentence. Despite these hurdles, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League emerged victorious, securing a fifth term in office.
“The 12th parliamentary election witnessed the Awami League maintaining its dominance, marking the second lowest voter turnout since the reinstatement of democracy in 1991. The elections were held on Sunday, and despite the lower participation, the victory underscores the faith that the people of Bangladesh have placed in Prime Minister Hasina’s leadership and her party’s vision for the nation”.
The enduring partnership between India and Bangladesh has been a focal point of diplomatic relations, and Prime Minister Modi’s congratulatory message reaffirms the commitment to strengthen the people-centric ties between the two nations. The successful conduct of the elections is also acknowledged, reflecting the democratic spirit and political engagement of the people of Bangladesh.
