On Tuesday, 6th February, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate the permanent campus of the (National Institute of Technology) NIT Goa. The momentous occasion will witness the participation of esteemed dignitaries, including Shri Sreedharan Pillai, the Honourable Governor of Goa; Dr. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa; Union Minister of Education & Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan; Shripad Naik, Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways & Tourism; Shri Francisco Sardinha, MP, South Goa; and Shri Yuri Alemao, Leader of Opposition and MLA from Cuncolim.
The fruition of this project is deeply rooted in the vision of the late Dr. Manohar Parrikar, former Chief Minister of Goa, who aimed to establish an institute of national importance in the state. His vision was to transform Goa into a prominent educational destination.
NIT Goa commenced its operations in 2010 at a transit campus within the premises of Goa Engineering College, Farmagudi, Ponda, Goa. With crucial support from the Ministry of Education, the institute gradually evolved and found its permanent home in Cuncolim, South Goa in 2023. The Government of Goa allocated a substantial land area of 456767 sqm (113 acres) in the village of Cuncolim in July 2017 for the construction of the permanent campus. The foundation stone for this landmark project was laid by Dr. Manohar Parrikar in the presence of Shri Prakash Javadekar, the then Union Minister of Human Resource Development, on 15 December 2018.
The planning for the construction of the NIT Goa campus began in May 2019, with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) serving as the Project Monitoring Committee. The first phase of the project, covering 46 acres of land, was conceptualized. The campus construction utilized RCC Precast 3S Technology, with a total built-up area of 70750 sqm and a construction cost of Rs 390.83 crore, accommodating 1,260 students.
The newly inaugurated campus boasts a range of facilities, including a tutorial complex, departmental complex, seminar complex, administrative complex, hostels, health center, staff quarters, amenity center, and a sports ground, among other utilities.
One of the significant highlights of the campus is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The inclusion of a solar plant, sewage treatment plant, water-saving fittings and fixtures, efficient electric lighting, and solar-powered street lights underscores the institute’s dedication to eco-friendly practices. The campus architecture prioritizes natural ventilation and lighting, minimizing reliance on electricity.
The successful completion and inauguration of the permanent campus mark a significant stride in realizing Dr. Manohar Parrikar’s vision for education in Goa. This state-of-the-art institution is poised to contribute substantially to the educational landscape of Goa and the nation, fostering academic excellence and innovation. The NIT Goa permanent campus stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the government, educational authorities, and the visionaries who strive to shape a brighter future through education.
