On social media, PM Modi shared, “Pained by the passing away of Shri Munawwar Rana Ji. He made rich contributions to Urdu literature & poetry. Condolences to his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”
Munawwar Rana, born on November 26, 1952, earned acclaim in the literary world and was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem “Shahdaba.” His poetic prowess resonated with readers, marking him as a significant figure in Urdu literature.
“Tragically, Munawwar Rana succumbed to throat cancer at the age of 71, breathing his last at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. The poet’s demise leaves a void in the literary landscape, with tributes pouring in from admirers and fellow poets”.
Notably, Rana, known for his principled stand, returned the Sahitya Akademi Award approximately a year after receiving it. Expressing his commitment against rising intolerance and state-sponsored communalism, he vowed never to accept a government award again.
In recognition of his services to Urdu literature, Munawwar Rana was awarded the Maati Ratan Samman by Shaheed Shodha Sansthan in 2012. His legacy extends beyond accolades, resonating in the hearts of those who cherished his words, making him an enduring icon in the world of Urdu poetry.
