On Friday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally designated R. Ashoka as the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. This announcement came subsequent to the BJP Legislature Party meeting.
Contenders for the position included Sunil Kumar, Ashwath Narayan, and Araga Jnanendra, with speculation surrounding their potential appointments.
The BJP faced criticism from the ruling Congress for the delay in naming the Leader of the Opposition, months after the state polls. In the May Assembly election, the Congress emerged victorious with wins on 135 seats, while the BJP secured 66 seats.
As the principal opposition party in Karnataka, the BJP’s decision comes just before the winter session of the state legislature in Belagavi, scheduled to commence on December 4. The previous session in July was conducted without a Leader of the Opposition, drawing attention and raising concerns.
