Delhi AAP leader Raghav Chadda took to social media to extend heartfelt birthday wishes to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, fondly referred to as ‘Didi.’ Chadda’s message conveyed sincere hopes for Mamata Banerjee’s well-being and a long, fulfilling life dedicated to serving the people.
Mamata Banerjee, born on January 5, 1955, has been a prominent figure in Indian politics, currently serving as the eighth and first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal since May 20, 2011. A seasoned politician, she founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in 1998, later becoming its second chairperson in 2001.
“Mamata Banerjee’s political journey has been marked by several notable achievements. She held key ministerial positions at the national level, serving twice as the Minister of Railways, making her the first woman to do so. Additionally, she served as the Minister of Coal, Minister of Human Resource Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women and Child Development in the Indian government’s cabinet”.
Her rise to prominence came as she opposed land acquisition policies in West Bengal that prioritized industrialization over the interests of agriculturalists and farmers at Singur. In 2011, Mamata Banerjee orchestrated a historic victory for the AITC alliance, ending the 34-year rule of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front government, the world’s longest-serving democratically elected communist-led government.
“While Banerjee faced a recent electoral setback in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, losing the Nandigram seat, her party secured a significant majority. Known for her resilience, she contested the election result in the Calcutta High Court, and the matter is currently sub judice”.
Mamata Banerjee remains a trailblazer, being the only female incumbent Chief Minister in India. As Raghav Chadda extends his warm wishes, the celebration of Mamata Banerjee’s birthday also serves as a moment to acknowledge her impactful contributions to Indian politics.
