Born on 27 July 1967, Rahul Bose is an Indian actor, director, screenwriter, and social activist. Bengali films such as Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Kalpurush, Anuranan, Antaheen, Laptop, and The Japanese Wife include Rahul Bose. Some of the Hindi films he has appeared in are Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam, Jhankaar Beats, Kucch Luv Jaisaa, Dil Dhadakne Do, Chameli, and Shaurya. He played the antagonist in the Tamil thriller Vishwaroopam (2013) and its sequel.
He has been named “the superstar of Indian arthouse cinema” by Time magazine and “the Sean Penn of Oriental cinema” by Maxim for his work in parallel cinema films like English, August, and Mr. and Mrs. Iyer. He is also notable for his social activism, such as participating in the relief efforts that followed the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, and for founding the anti-discrimination NGO, The Foundation.
Early life:
Rahul Bose was born on 27 July 1967 to his father Rupen and his mother Kumud Bose. At the age of six, Bose played the lead character, Tom, in a school play, the Piper’s Son. After his mother introduced him to boxing and rugby union, he took an interest in sports as a child. Former India cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi coached him while he played cricket.
He attended the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. Bose attended Sydenham College after being rejected by a number of American universities. He won a silver medal in boxing while playing on the school’s rugby team and competing in the Western India Championships at college.
Rahul Bose began working as a copywriter at Rediffusion after his mother’s death in 1987 and was later promoted to advertising creative director. After the release of his first film, English, August, Bose left his job to become a full-time actor.
