Rainfall Alert: East and Northeast India Brace for Intense Monsoon Activity

Monsoon: A well-marked low-pressure area over central parts of north Madhya Pradesh has moved westwards and intensified into a depression. As of 0530 hours IST on 25th August, it was centered over northwest Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding areas, near latitude 24.5°N and longitude 77.3°E, close to Guna, and approximately 160 km east-southeast of Kota in East Rajasthan. This depression is predicted to move west-southwestwards and further intensify into a deep depression over southern Rajasthan and adjoining northern Gujarat by 27th August. It is expected to continue its journey west-southwestwards, emerging into the northeast Arabian Sea off the coasts of Saurashtra & Kutch and southern Pakistan around 29th August.

Monsoon Trough and Offshore Trough Dynamics

The western end of the Monsoon trough is currently positioned south of its normal alignment, while the eastern end remains in its usual position. This configuration is expected to persist for the next 2-3 days. This development is likely to influence weather patterns along the western coast of India.

Monsoon: Rainfall Forecast for Northwest and Central India

Northwest India can expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall. In particular, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Uttarakhand on the 28th of August, and in Punjab & Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on the 27th and 28th of August. Uttar Pradesh will experience similar conditions on 25th August. Rajasthan will see isolated very heavy rainfall on the 25th and 26th of August, with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall over East Rajasthan on the 25th of August.

In West and Central India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected throughout the week. Heavy rainfall is predicted over regions such as Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra & Kutch, and the Gujarat region during the period from 25th to 29th August. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over West Madhya Pradesh on 25th August and in the Gujarat Region from 25th-26th August.

Monsoon: Rainfall Patterns in East, Northeast, and South Peninsular India

In East and Northeast India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated. Heavy rainfall is expected in areas including Andaman & Nicobar Islands on the 27th of August, West Bengal & Sikkim, and Odisha on the 26th of August. Assam & Meghalaya, along with Mizoram & Tripura, will experience very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rainfall predicted for Tripura and Mizoram on 26th August.

For South Peninsular India, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected across Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Coastal Karnataka. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Kerala & Mahe from 25th to 30th August, and in Telangana on 25th August. Coastal Karnataka will experience heavy rainfall on the 25th and 26th of August.
