Raj Kapoor was an Indian actor, film director, and producer who worked in Hindi cinema. He was born Shrishti Nath Kapoor but was also known as Ranbir Raj Kapoor. He died on 2 June 1988. One of the greatest and most influential actors and filmmakers in Hindi Cinema, he is considered. He is often referred to as one of the greatest showmen of Indian Cinema.
He received multiple accolades, including three National Film Awards, 11 Filmfare Awards, and multiple other awards in India. The Kapoor family has a long history in the Indian film industry, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award is named after them.
He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1971 by the Government of India for his contributions to the arts. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in cinema, was bestowed on him in 1987 by the Government of India.
Early life:
Into a Punjabi Hindu family of the Kapoor clan who belonged to the Dhai Ghar Khatri community was born Raj Kapoor on December 14, 1924, at Kapoor Haveli in the Qissa Khwani Bazaar neighborhood, Peshawar, British India.
Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Devi Kapoor were his parents. The Kapoor family originally came from Samundri, Samundri Tehsil, Lyallpur District, Punjab Province, British India. There were six children in the family and he was the eldest.
During the 1930s, as Prithviraj moved from city to city early in his career, the family had to move too. Raj Kapoor attended several different schools including Colonel Brown Cambridge School in Dera Doon, St Xavier’s Collegiate School in Calcutta, and Campion School in Bombay.
Personal life:
Raj Kapoor married his first cousin once removed, Krishna Malhotra (1931-2018), on 12 May 1945. She was Raj Kapoor’s first cousin because her father was Prithviraj Kapoor’s brother. The Kapoor family had five children: three sons, actors Randhir Kapoor (1947-), Rishi Kapoor (1952-2020) and Rajiv Kapoor (1962-2021), and two daughters, Ritu Nanda (1949-2020) and Rima Jain (1955-).
Randhir Kapoor is married to former actress Babita and is the father of actresses Karishma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Rishi was married to former actress Neetu Singh and they had two children, a daughter Riddhima, and a son, actor Ranbir Kapoor. Rishi died recently. Ritu Nanda, Raj Kapoor’s elder daughter, was married to industrialist Rajan Nanda until their deaths.
