Rajnath Singh and Maldives Defence Minister Discuss Bilateral Ties

On January 8, 2025, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and the Defence Minister of Maldives, Mr Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, engaged in crucial bilateral discussions in New Delhi. The talks primarily focused on strengthening the defence and security cooperation between India and the Maldives.

Strengthening India-Maldives Defence Cooperation

During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a shared vision for India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s support to the Maldives in bolstering its defence preparedness.

He assured continued assistance, including providing defence platforms and assets, aligned with the Maldives’ national priorities. The talks also reflected India’s broader ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and the vision of SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region).

India’s Historical Role and Assistance

Minister Maumoon expressed gratitude towards India for its role as the Maldives’ “First Responder” during times of need. He acknowledged India’s significant contributions in enhancing the Maldives’ infrastructure and providing training to its defence personnel. As part of the ongoing cooperation, India handed over crucial defence equipment and stores to the Maldives on its request.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties for Mutual Benefit

This visit marks the first official trip to India by Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and is part of continued high-level engagements between the two countries. The talks served as a pivotal moment to deepen defence and security relations, contributing to peace and stability in the Indian Ocean region.
