On January 8, 2025, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will meet with the Defence Minister of Maldives, Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon, in New Delhi. The two Ministers will engage in discussions focused on enhancing bilateral defence ties between India and the Maldives.
Key areas of cooperation will include training, joint exercises, defence projects, workshops, and seminars aimed at improving the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF).
Exploring Defence Equipment and Supply Cooperation
One of the main topics of discussion will be the supply of defence equipment and stores to the Maldives, which will further strengthen the defence readiness of both nations. This cooperation aligns with India’s broader vision to foster peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), where both countries play a crucial role.
India-Maldives: A Strategic Partnership
India and the Maldives share deep historical, spiritual, and cultural ties. The Maldives holds a special place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, which seeks to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean. Both nations are pivotal in ensuring the security and safety of the IOR, contributing to India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
Maldives Defence Minister’s Visit
During his three-day visit to India from January 8 to 10, 2025, Mr. Maumoon will also visit Goa and Mumbai, further cementing the strong defence relationship between the two countries.
