Rajya Sabha Elections 2024: 56 Seats Across 15 States Set for Polls on February 27

The Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India’s Parliament, operates on a rotational retirement system to maintain a stable and experienced legislative body. Members of the Rajya Sabha serve a six-year term, and to ensure a continuous infusion of new perspectives while retaining seasoned representatives, one-third of the members retire every two years.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) recently declared that elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats from 15 states will be conducted on February 27. This process becomes crucial as the term of office for 50 Rajya Sabha members from 13 states is set to conclude on April 2. Additionally, the remaining six members from two states are due to retire on April 3.

The states where Rajya Sabha polls are scheduled include Uttar Pradesh (10 seats), Maharashtra (6), Bihar (6), West Bengal (5), Madhya Pradesh (5), Gujarat (4), Karnataka (4), Chhattisgarh (1), Andhra Pradesh (3), Telangana (3), Rajasthan (3), Haryana (1), Odisha (3), Uttarakhand (1), and Himachal Pradesh (1).

This electoral rotation ensures that the Rajya Sabha maintains a dynamic composition, allowing for the infusion of fresh talent while benefiting from the wisdom and experience of seasoned members. As a key part of India’s bicameral parliamentary system, the Rajya Sabha plays a crucial role in reviewing and refining legislation, providing valuable checks and balances to the legislative process.
