Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the Punya Tithi of Shyamji Krishna Varma, honoring his significant contributions to India’s struggle for independence. Varma, a distinguished revolutionary fighter, lawyer, and journalist, founded the Indian Home Rule Society, India House, and The Indian Sociologist in London.
A scholar proficient in Sanskrit and Indian languages, Varma graduated from Balliol College before pursuing a legal career in India. Serving as the Divan of several Indian princely states, he advocated for cultural nationalism and staunchly resisted British colonial authority.
In 1905, Shyamji Krishna Varma established India House and The Indian Sociologist, which emerged as crucial hubs for radical nationalists among Indian students in Britain, fostering revolutionary Indian nationalism abroad. Despite facing persecution, Varma’s unwavering commitment to India’s freedom movement led him to relocate to Paris in 1907.
PM Modi’s homage underscores the enduring legacy of Shyamji Krishna Varma, reminding us of his indomitable spirit and the ideals he fought for. As we reflect on Varma’s contributions, let us renew our pledge to uphold the principles of freedom and nationalism that he epitomized.
