Remembering the 2001 Parliament Attack: PM Modi Pays Homage to Martyred Security Personnel

As the nation marks the solemn anniversary of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered poignant words of remembrance and gratitude for the brave security personnel who sacrificed their lives in defense of the country. In a statement, PM Modi stated, “Today, we remember and pay heartfelt tributes to the brave security personnel martyred in the Parliament attack in 2001.”

The attack, which occurred on 13th December 2001, shook the foundations of India’s democratic stronghold in New Delhi. Five armed assailants targeted the Parliament, resulting in the tragic deaths of six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service personnel, and a gardener. The assailants were thwarted by the swift and courageous response of security forces, leading to the elimination of all five attackers.

“Indian authorities attributed the attack to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), two militant groups operating from Pakistan. However, LeT denied involvement. This incident escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, ultimately culminating in the 2001–2002 India–Pakistan standoff”.

The attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles, grenade launchers, pistols, and grenades, drove a car with Home Ministry and Parliament labels into the Parliament complex. While both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha had adjourned before the incident, numerous members of parliament and government officials were believed to still be in the building.

“Constable Kamlesh Kumari of the Central Reserve Police Force played a crucial role in raising the alarm, sacrificing her life in the process. The total casualties amounted to nine lives, with at least 17 others injured. The Vice President, ministers, and MPs escaped unharmed, thanks to the valiant efforts of security personnel”.

In paying tribute, PM Modi acknowledged, “Their courage and sacrifice in the face of danger will forever be etched in our nation’s memory.” The resilience shown by the security forces and the collective grief and determination that followed the attack became integral parts of India’s history.
