Amit Shah, a prominent political figure in India and the Minister of Home Affairs, emphasized the crucial role played by the cooperative movement in the country’s economy. Shah highlighted the substantial contributions of cooperatives in various sectors, including credit distribution, fertilizer distribution and production, sugar production, and milk procurement, sale, and production.

Cooperative Movement in Credit Distribution

Amit Shah underscored the importance of cooperatives in credit distribution, stating that they account for approximately 29% of the economy in this domain. Cooperatives play a vital role in providing accessible and affordable credit facilities to individuals and businesses, particularly in rural areas. Their inclusive approach and localized operations contribute to the overall development and financial empowerment of communities.

Cooperatives in Fertilizer Distribution and Production

Shah further highlighted the role of cooperatives in the distribution and production of fertilizers. According to his statement, cooperatives account for around 35% of the fertilizer distribution and 25% of the fertilizer production in India. This showcases the significant contribution of cooperatives in ensuring the availability of fertilizers to support agricultural productivity and food security in the country.

Role of Cooperatives in Sugar Production

Amit Shah emphasized that cooperatives play a crucial role in sugar production, with their share exceeding 35% in this sector. The cooperative sugar mills contribute significantly to the country’s sugar production, enabling the growth of the sugar industry and supporting the livelihoods of farmers involved in sugarcane cultivation.

Significance of Cooperatives in Milk Procurement, Sale, and Production

Shah highlighted that cooperatives have a notable presence in the procurement, sale, and production of milk, with their share touching 15%. This indicates the crucial role played by cooperatives in the dairy sector, ensuring fair prices for milk producers, facilitating milk collection and distribution, and supporting the growth of the dairy industry in India.
