Early Life:-
Rudi Dil, who would later be known as Gullit, was born in Amsterdam to George Gullit, a Surinamese, and Ria Dil, a Dutch woman from the Jordaan district of Amsterdam. Herman Rijkaard, Frank Rijkaard’s father, arrived in the Netherlands with George Gullit. The Gullit family lived in a small apartment with one split-level room on the top floor.
His father worked as an economics teacher at a local school and his mother as a custodian at the Rijksmuseum. Street football was instrumental in Gullit’s formative years, as he developed his skills in the confines of the Rozendwarsstraat. He joined the Meerboys as a junior in 1970, which was his first team. However, at the age of ten Gullit moved from the Jordaan to Amsterdam Old West where he played street football alongside Frank Rijkaard.
After Gullit joined the DWS club, he came to the attention of the Dutch youth team and played alongside future full international teammates Erwin Koeman, Ronald Koeman, and Wim Kieft. He thought Gullit sounded more like a football player, so during his time at DWS, he first took to using his father’s surname rather than his registered surname from his mother. He retained his mother’s surname, officially, however, and continues to sign all contracts as Ruud Dil.
