S. M. Krishna Passes Away at 92: PM Modi Remembers Visionary Leader

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences on the passing of S. M. Krishna, a towering figure in Indian politics and a former Chief Minister of Karnataka. Shri Modi highlighted SM Krishna’s invaluable contributions to the state, particularly in the realm of infrastructural development and promoting ‘Brand Bengaluru.’

In a tribute shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi described S. M. Krishna as a leader admired across diverse sections of society.

“SM Krishna was an extraordinary leader, respected across all sections of society. He dedicated his life to uplifting others and is cherished for his impactful tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, especially for prioritizing infrastructural growth. He was also a keen reader and a thoughtful intellectual,” wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

S. M. Krishna was renowned for his vision and modern approach to governance. His tenure as Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004) is particularly remembered for initiatives aimed at making Bengaluru a global IT hub. He championed infrastructure projects, urban development, and policies that propelled Karnataka to the forefront of technological advancements.

Krishna’s contributions extended beyond Karnataka, with a notable tenure as India’s External Affairs Minister (2009–2012), where he played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s global diplomatic relations.

S. M. Krishna was a political leader, prolific reader, and thinker. His intellectual pursuits and commitment to public service made him an inspiration for many.

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli village, Mandya district, Karnataka, Krishna graduated in law and pursued higher studies at Southern Methodist University, USA. He started his political journey with the Indian National Congress and transitioned to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2017.

The Final Goodbye

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna passed away on Tuesday morning at his residence at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations. He is survived by his wife, Prema, & two daughters, Shambhavi & Malavika.

His family shared that he had been unwell for some time and breathed his last at 2:45 AM.
