A former professional footballer, Samir Nasri was born on 26 June 1987 in France. He primarily played as an attacking midfielder and a winger, but he had also been deployed in central midfield. Nasri was known for his ability to dribble, control the ball, and pass. He was described as an opponent whose “vision and imagination make him an unpredictable player”. He was compared to former French player Zinedine Zidane because of his playing style, ability, and cultural background.
Nasri’s football career began when he played for local youth clubs in his hometown of Marseille. He joined the professional club Olympique de Marseille at age nine and spent the next seven years developing in the club’s youth academy at La Commanderie, the club’s training center. He made his professional debut in September 2004 against Sochaux at age 17 in the 2004–05 season. He became a regular starter in the following season and participated in European competition for the first time in the 2005-06 edition of the UEFA Cup.
Nasri won the National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) Young Player of the Year award in the 2006–07 campaign and was also named to the Team of the Year. He amassed over 160 appearances in his career with Marseille. He played on the 2006 and 2007 teams that reached back-to-back Coupe de France finals.

Nasri, whose parents are French nationals of Algerian descent, was born in Septèmes-Les-Vallons, a northern suburb of Marseille. He was born in France to Ouassila Ben Saïd and Abdelhafid Nasri. His father was born and raised in Marseille, and his mother is from nearby Salon-de-Provence. Nasri’s grandparents emigrated from Algeria to France. His father was a bus driver before becoming his son’s personal manager and his mother is a housewife.
After his selection to the France under-16 team, Nasri switched to his father’s surname, Nasri, from his mother’s surname, Ben Saïd, at the start of his football career. He is a Muslim and the eldest of four children. Nasri has a younger sister named Sonia, twin brothers named Walid and Malik, and a pet dog. All four were raised in La Gavotte Peyret, a small town in the south of France. Nasri settled in Hampstead, a district of North London, after joining Arsenal in England.
