In a significant move, Samsung is set to initiate laptop manufacturing at its Noida facility later this year, as confirmed by TM Roh, the president and head of the mobile experience business. This development underscores India’s growing importance as Samsung’s second-largest manufacturing hub globally.
Roh attributed Samsung’s expansion in India to the favorable policies of the Indian government. However, he acknowledged the need for optimization at their facilities, including the Noida plant, in response to the global demand slowdown in 2023.
“Noida holds significant importance as a production hub for Samsung, standing as the company’s 2nd-largest base. While certain adjustments might occur at the plant to align with global demand, the fundamental importance of Noida as a pivotal base for Samsung remains unwavering,” affirmed Roh.
Last year, India imposed restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets, servers, and other items to reduce dependency on imported IT hardware. This aligns with the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for consumer electronics like personal computers, laptops, and tablets.
Roh affirmed Samsung’s commitment to cooperating with the Indian government to strengthen manufacturing in the country. The revamped ₹17,000 crore PLI scheme introduced in May 2023 aims to attract laptop, tablet, and other hardware manufacturers to India, reducing the annual import of laptops and tablets worth about $8 billion.
Samsung’s recent launch of the Galaxy S24 series smartphone, with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, adds to the list of locally manufactured products in India. The tech giant has been producing feature phones, smartphones, wearables, and tablets within the country.
