Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, has officially inaugurated a month-long celebration drive for the 8th National Ayurveda Day across India. This annual observance pays tribute to Lord Dhanvantari, revered as the God of Ayurveda, and aligns with the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, where people seek blessings for good health, not only for themselves but also for others.
During a curtain-raiser press conference at the media center, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the importance of Ayurveda in promoting overall well-being, encompassing not only human health but also the well-being of the environment, plants, animals, and more. The chosen theme for this year’s celebration is “Ayurveda for One Health,” which echoes India’s G20 Presidency theme, ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ highlighting the interconnectedness of all life forms.
The Union Minister elaborated on the government’s comprehensive approach to the month-long celebrations, emphasizing the need for Ayurveda to play a pivotal role in healthcare, aligning with the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. He emphasized that by harnessing Ayurveda’s potential, a healthcare revolution can address the concept of One Health, which recognizes the interdependence of human, animal, plant, and environmental health.
The month-long celebrations are designed to raise awareness about Ayurveda among students, farmers, and the general public across India. This year, the 8th Ayurveda Day falls on November 10, 2023. Each year, the Ministry of Ayush selects a different theme for Ayurveda Day to address various health issues through Ayurveda. These themed programs are conducted nationwide, educating millions about health concerns and Ayurveda’s role in prevention and treatment.
The “Ayurveda for One Health” theme is centered around three main areas: Ayurveda for Farmers, Ayurveda for Students, and Ayurveda for the Public. It aims to promote Agro-Ayurveda, encourage self-participation in health, and inspire professionals to harness Ayurveda’s potential.
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, shared that over 12,500 Ayush Health & Wellness Centers have been approved under the National Ayush Mission, with 8095 of them already operational. The month-long Ayurveda campaign will include a range of activities, such as exhibitions, research study dissemination, medical camps, public awareness lectures, distribution of medicinal plants to farmers, competitions, runs, and rallies.
The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Science (CCRAS) will serve as the coordinating agency for the 2023 Ayurveda Day programs, with its 30 units located across the country actively participating in the celebrations. This annual event not only honors Ayurveda’s rich heritage but also promotes its modern relevance in achieving holistic health and well-being.
