Golden Temple: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a police complaint against Instagram influencer Archana Makwana for performing yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple in Amritsar. This action has sparked a wave of outrage among the Sikh community, highlighting concerns over the sanctity of the revered site.
The incident took place on June 21, observed globally as International Day of Yoga, when Makwana entered the Parikrama, the marble walkway for pilgrims’ prayers, and conducted yoga asanas. SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami expressed deep disappointment over the incident, stressing that such actions disregard the sacredness of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib.
In response to the incident, disciplinary action was taken against three ‘sewadars’ (employees) who allowed Makwana to perform yoga within the temple premises. An inquiry committee was promptly set up by the SGPC to investigate the negligence of these employees.
Archana Makwana, in light of the controversy and widespread backlash, issued a public apology for her actions. She acknowledged the hurt caused to Sikh sentiments and expressed regret over her conduct at the holy site.
Golden Temple General Manager Bhagwant Singh Dhangera confirmed that Makwana had posted photos of her yoga session on social media. CCTV footage corroborated her presence from 6:57 a.m., with yoga performed at 7:04 a.m., spending nearly an hour in the Parikrama without engaging in prayers.
The SGPC, often described as the ‘Mini Parliament’ of the Sikh religion, continues to uphold the sanctity and respect of its holy shrines. The incident has sparked a broader discussion about respecting religious sensitivities and the appropriate conduct within sacred spaces like the Golden Temple.
