The Government of India has designated June 29 as Statistics Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. This annual observance aims to raise awareness, particularly among the youth, about the pivotal role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

The theme for Statistics Day 2024, “Use of data for decision-making,” underscores the importance of data-driven approaches in making informed decisions across various domains. This theme emphasizes leveraging statistical information for evidence-based policymaking and developmental strategies.
Highlights of Statistics Day Event, 2024
The main event for Statistics Day 2024 will be held at Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, New Delhi. Dr. Arvind Panagariya, Chairman of the 16th Finance Commission, will grace the occasion as Chief Guest. Chairman of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), Prof. Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar & Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI, will also address the participants.
Key Releases and Activities
The event will witness the release of the Sustainable Development Goals- National Indicator Framework Progress Report, 2024, along with Data Snapshots on the Sustainable Development Goals. Additionally, MoSPI will launch the eSankhyiki portal and Central Data Repository, aimed at enhancing the dissemination and accessibility of official statistics.
On-the-Spot Essay Writing Competition and Technical Sessions
As part of the celebrations, winners of the ‘On the Spot Essay Writing Competition, 2024’ for Post Graduate Students will be honored. The technical sessions will feature expert presentations on the theme “Use of data for decision-making,” offering insights into contemporary statistical practices and methodologies.
Statistics Day 2024 promises to be a significant platform for fostering dialogue, sharing insights, and advancing the role of statistics in shaping India’s development agenda through informed decision-making.
