Tata’s Semiconductor: In a pivotal move towards establishing a comprehensive semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India, the construction of Tata’s semiconductor unit in Assam commenced today. The ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran. Union Minister for Railways, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav emphasized the alignment with the Act East policy and the milestone achieved. This project, approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, is part of the ₹76,000 crore initiative launched on December 21, 2021.
Project Overview
The semiconductor unit, set to be developed with an investment of ₹27,000 crores, is expected to create 15,000 direct and 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs. With a daily production capacity of 4.83 crore semiconductor chips, the unit will advance indigenous packaging technologies like Wire Bond, flip chip, and I-SIP, crucial for sectors such as automotive and communications.
Talent Development Initiatives
The Union Minister also highlighted efforts to develop a skilled workforce, with 85,000 professionals being trained in semiconductor chip design at 113 academic institutions nationwide, including nine in the Northeast. Institutions involved include the National Institute of Technology Silchar and North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
