The first G-20 Employment Working Group concluded in Jodhpur with positive results, with all G20 countries showing a commitment to work towards the three priority areas of Addressing Global Skills Gaps, Gig & platform economy & social protection, and Sustainable Financing of Social Security.
The three-day meeting was led by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in India, with the mandate to address labour, employment, and social issues for strong, sustainable, balanced, and job-rich growth for all.
During the meeting, delegates discussed strategies for global skills and qualifications harmonization and a framework for common skill taphonomy. The presentations and interventions from countries and international organizations covered the priority issues of Addressing Global Skills Gaps, Gig and Platform Economy and Social Protection, and Sustainable Financing of Social Security. The discussions provided a platform for experience sharing on the existing conditions and legal framework for skill development, gig and platform economy, and social security in different countries.
The meeting was opened by Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who called upon members of the international community to strive together to create more opportunities for decent work and inclusive growth. The Minister emphasized the theme of India’s G20 Presidency, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which highlights the interconnectedness of economies and peoples, and the importance of working together to build a better future for all.
International organizations such as the ILO, OECD, and ISSA made presentations on the current and emerging challenges in social protection and the need for universal social security. The World Bank also highlighted the need for universal social protection, and the Employees Provident Fund Organization from the Ministry of Labour and Employment in India presented initiatives and schemes being implemented to enhance and strengthen social security.
