Jagan Mohan Reddy, born on 21 December 1972 and commonly known as Y.S. Jagan or Jagan, is an Indian entrepreneur and politician serving as the 17th and current chief minister of Andhra Pradesh since 30 May 2019. The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) was founded and is currently headed by him. He is the son of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
In 2009, Jagan Mohan Reddy started his political career in the Indian National Congress and was elected as the Member of the Parliament of Kadapa. After his father died in a helicopter crash in 2009, he started the Odarpu Yatra across the state. He then eventually came out of the Congress Party and established his own party, YSR Congress Party, which also matches his father’s acronym, YSR.
He became the Leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections in 2014 when YSRCP won 67 seats. In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, five years after he took charge, he led the party to a landslide and never before seen victory in the state elections by winning 151 seats of the total 175 assembly segments.

Jagan Mohan Reddy was born in Jammalamadugu, Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh to Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Y. S. Vijayamma. He attended The Hyderabad Public School through 12th grade. His best friend at school was Tollywood actor Sumanth Kumar Yarlagadda.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Pragathi Mahavidyalaya Degree and PG college Ram Koti, Hyderabad. The couple has two daughters, with the elder having studied undergraduate in London. Reddy, who has a younger sister who is also a politician, is Y.S. Sharmila.
Jagan Reddy, known as Mr. JMR or Mr. Reddy to his peers, first began his career in infrastructure development, focusing on the power sector. In 2001, Reddy first acquired Sandur Power Company Limited (SPCL), a defunct power project, from its original promoter M B Ghorpade.
Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, popularly known as YSR, was Reddy’s father and a two-time chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, serving from 2004 to 2009. He started his political career by campaigning for Indian National Congress during the 2004 elections in the Kadapa district. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency in 2009.
The Telugu daily newspaper Sakshi and the television channel Sakshi TV were founded by Reddy. He was also the main promoter of Bharathi Cements.
The YSR Congress Party swept the polls in the 2019 National and State election, winning 151 of the total 175 assembly seats and 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister on the 30th of May 2019. He has been chief minister for a while and has implemented many welfare schemes such as Jagananna Amma Vodi, and Navaratnalu.
