The temple was first built by King Thondaiman, who ruled over the region in the 8th century. Over the centuries, various dynasties and rulers contributed to the expansion and development of the temple, including the Pallavas, Cholas, Vijayanagara Empire, and the rulers of Mysore. Today, the temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), a board appointed by the Tamil Nadu government to oversee the administration and affairs of the temple.

The architecture of Thirumala Temple

Thirumala Temple is a magnificent example of Dravidian-style architecture, with towering gopurams (entrance towers), mandapams (pillared halls), and prakarams (enclosures). The main temple complex is spread over an area of 2.2 acres and is surrounded by seven hills, which are believed to represent the seven heads of Adisesha, the serpent god who serves as Lord Vishnu’s divine couch. The main entrance to the temple is through the Mahadwaram, a towering gopuram that stands at a height of 50 feet. The inner sanctum of the temple houses the idol of Lord Venkateswara, which is believed to be a self-manifested idol.

Rituals and Offerings at Thirumala Temple

Thirumala Temple is known for its elaborate rituals and offerings, which are performed daily to appease the deity and seek his blessings. The most important ritual at the temple is the Suprabhatam, which is a morning prayer offered to Lord Venkateswara. This is followed by several other rituals, including Thomala Seva, Archana, and Ekantha Seva. Devotees can also offer various kinds of sevas (offerings) to the deity, including hair tonsuring, offering of gold and silver ornaments, and hundi (donation) offerings.

Festivals Celebrated at Thirumala Temple

Thirumala Temple is known for its vibrant and colorful festivals, which attract millions of devotees from all over the world. The most important festival at the temple is Brahmotsavam, which is celebrated over a period of nine days in the month of September or October. The festival involves various rituals and ceremonies, including the hoisting of the Garuda flag, the procession of the deity on different vahanas (vehicles), and the immersion of the Brahmotsavam flag.
