TMC Veteran Tapas Roy Resigns, Hints at Quitting Party

Tapas Roy, a longstanding figure within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has taken a significant step by tendering his resignation to the West Bengal assembly speaker, indicating his potential exit from the Mamata Banerjee-led party. Tapas Roy’s decision stems from various grievances, including perceived neglect during an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on his residence in January and dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of certain issues.

Expressing his disillusionment with the functioning of the TMC, Tapas Roy criticized the party leadership for allegedly failing to support him adequately amidst the ED investigation. He lamented the prevalence of corruption allegations against both the party and the government, highlighting his discomfort with recent developments such as the handling of the Sandeshkhali issue.

Tapas Roy’s strained relationship with TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhyay further fueled his decision to resign. Despite his decades-long loyalty to the party, Roy felt that he was not duly recognized or appreciated for his contributions. He cited instances where he perceived a lack of respect and cooperation within the party, leading to his decision to step down.

In his statement, Tapas Roy emphasized that the prevailing culture of corruption within the TMC was incompatible with his values. He voiced his discontent with the apparent impunity enjoyed by certain members, while others bore the brunt of consequences for their actions.

Having faced internal conflicts and disengagement from party activities, Roy’s resignation marks a significant moment in his political journey. While he has yet to finalize his plans, his departure from the TMC underscores broader tensions within the party and raises questions about its internal dynamics and leadership.

As Tapas Roy navigates this pivotal moment in his political career, his decision to part ways with the TMC reflects larger shifts and challenges within West Bengal’s political landscape.
