Guwahati: The search for 8-year-old Abhinash, who tragically fell into a storm drain in Guwahati’s Jyotinagar area and was swept away, concluded on Sunday with the recovery of his body, bringing a heart-wrenching end to days of desperate efforts by rescue teams.
Abhinash had slipped from his father’s scooter during heavy rainfall on Thursday evening, prompting a frantic attempt by his father, Hiralal, to save him, only to be overcome by the strong current himself. Since then, Hiralal and his wife had maintained a vigil at the search site, hoping against hope for their son’s safe return.
A massive operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities was immediately launched. The rescue efforts utilized sniffer dogs, excavators, and other specialized equipment to scour the storm drain and its surroundings.
The poignant discovery of Abhinash’s body in the Rajgarh area, more than four kilometers downstream from where he fell into the drain, marked a devastating conclusion to the search efforts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound sadness over the tragic outcome and extended heartfelt condolences to Abhinash’s bereaved parents and family. Sarma had personally visited the search area in Jyotinagar on Saturday to console the family and assure them of continued support.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed deep sorrow upon learning of the discovery of the child’s body. “My heartfelt condolences go out to the parents & family during this unimaginable time,” he shared on X. He also expressed sincere appreciation to the dedicated personnel of NDRF, SDRF, the Police, and the District Administration for their relentless efforts in the search and rescue mission.
The tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by natural elements during monsoon seasons and underscores the need for swift emergency responses to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.
