In a significant move to address the financial challenges faced by disabled individuals, the Department for Work and Pensions has initiated a one-off payment scheme. This payment aims to assist disabled individuals in covering the extra costs they encounter as a result of their disabilities. Notably, the majority of eligible recipients, including those receiving Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment, have received this crucial support within just five working days since the rollout began. The remaining outstanding payments are expected to be made by the 4th of July.
Government’s Focus on Tackling High Inflation
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride MP, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing high inflation as a primary objective. Recognizing the strain it puts on households and the cost of living, the government aims to ease this pressure by providing timely support to those most in need. By disbursing payments of £150 to over six million disabled individuals within a week, the government demonstrates its dedication to delivering swift assistance to those facing financial challenges due to their disabilities.
Efforts to Alleviate Financial Burdens
Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, Tom Pursglove MP, emphasizes the government’s commitment to ensuring that disabled individuals coping with additional costs can access the necessary funds promptly. Expressing delight in the successful distribution of payments to eligible individuals within just five working days, Pursglove highlights the ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society. The government plans to reinforce this effort by providing further cost-of-living payments for benefit claimants in the coming months.
Automatic Payment Process
To streamline the payment process and expedite assistance to eligible recipients, the one-off payment is made automatically. Individuals eligible for this support need not take any additional action, as the payment is processed without requiring their input. The payment reference on bank statements will display the individual’s National Insurance number, followed by the abbreviation “DWP COL.”

Additional Financial Support for Vulnerable Groups
In addition to the one-off payment recently disbursed, the UK government provided a £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment in September of the previous year. Moreover, pensioners can expect to receive an additional £300 payment later this year as an extension to the Winter Fuel Payment. Furthermore, individuals on eligible means-tested benefits will receive up to two additional Cost of Living Payments through to the next spring.
Extended Cost of Living Payments
With the intention of offering continued support to vulnerable households, the government plans to provide up to two more Cost of Living Payments in the future. These payments will be made available to individuals on eligible means-tested benefits, thus extending the duration of assistance through to the following spring.
Total Direct Cost of Living Support for Vulnerable Households
Taking into account the various support measures implemented, the most vulnerable households can receive a total of £1,350 in direct Cost of Living support. This comprehensive aid package aims to alleviate the financial burden experienced by disabled individuals and others facing economic challenges.
Ongoing Eligibility Confirmation Process
While the majority of payments have been successfully made within the designated timeframe, a smaller number of payments will be issued after the 4th of July. This delay pertains to claimants who were still awaiting confirmation of their eligibility or entitlement to qualifying disability benefits as of the 1st of April. The government remains committed to ensuring that all eligible individuals receive the support they require and continues to work towards a smooth and efficient eligibility confirmation process.
