The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has taken a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities by signing three contracts worth more than £90 million. These contracts, executed on behalf of the International Fund for Ukraine (IFU), underscore the commitment of the UK and its allies to provide advanced military assistance to Ukraine.
One of the key contracts, valued at £56 million, has been awarded to Norwegian defence company Kongsberg. This contract focuses on the acquisition of state-of-the-art vehicle-mounted counter-drone systems designed to detect, track, and neutralize uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). The CORTEX Typhon system, developed by Kongsberg, boasts exceptional flexibility and operational efficiency. Operable by just two users, it can be swiftly deployed and repositioned to optimize its performance.
The CORTEX Typhon system operates autonomously or as part of a network, leveraging an array of sophisticated sensors, cameras, radars, and electronic surveillance equipment to engage and disrupt drones. This advanced technology provides Ukraine with a robust defence against emerging threats from UAS.
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace hailed the versatility of these air defence systems, stating that they could be rapidly deployed for both civilian protection and frontline operations. The contracts signify the determination of allies to unite in equipping Ukraine with cutting-edge equipment to bolster its security.
The contracts are a result of procurement packages unveiled earlier this year by IFU defence ministers, encompassing air defence capabilities, drones, radars, and electronic warfare systems. The recent delivery of aerial reconnaissance drones adds to Ukraine’s enhanced capabilities, designed to carry out diverse reconnaissance missions on land and at sea.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are actively training on these systems, which will contribute to a comprehensive package comprising more than 100 drones. These uncrewed aerial systems encompass various roles, including target acquisition, electronic warfare, artillery guidance, and nocturnal operations.
The IFU, fueled by financial contributions from international partners such as the UK, Norway, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, and Lithuania, ensures the continuous provision of vital military assistance to Ukraine, encompassing both lethal and non-lethal support.
The UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine remains steadfast, with over £2.3 billion designated for further military assistance through 2023. This comprehensive aid package, including munitions and equipment, will fortify Ukraine’s security posture. In addition to military support, the UK government continues to extend humanitarian aid and economic assistance to Ukraine, underscoring its unwavering partnership.
