The Regiment’s Short-Term Training Team, accompanied by a Royal Marine Medic, recently visited The Gambia to deliver a “Train the Trainer” package aimed at developing the Gambian Armed Forces (GAF) ability to train their own personnel. This is part of the UK Defence’s efforts to build capability with key partners across Africa.
The training covered fieldcraft, and first aid, and culminated in a realistic battle exercise. To improve the Gambian Armed Forces’ capacity to aid forthcoming UN missions, the soldiers were provided with refresher training and encouraged to create and provide their own instructional materials.
The closing ceremony was overseen by Brigadier General Torro Jawneh of the GAF, who presented awards to the top-performing students. This visit is the latest in a series of training deployments to Africa, highlighting the UK’s commitment to building capabilities and partnerships with key countries across the continent.
The UK’s partnership with The Gambia dates back to 2017, with the aim of supporting stability, security, and economic growth in the country. This latest training deployment demonstrates the UK’s continued commitment to working with its partners to achieve common goals and enhance security across Africa.
