World Dyslexia Day is observed annually to shed light on dyslexia, a common learning disorder that affects an individual’s ability to read and write proficiently. For those with dyslexia, skills that many take for granted, such as reading and writing fluently, can be challenging. Dyslexia can hinder the ability to read quickly and write without errors, as well as impact vocabulary and tasks requiring hand-eye coordination.
This day serves as a platform to raise awareness about these challenges and to explore strategies for managing this disorder. The ultimate goal of World Dyslexia Day is to promote inclusivity, provide better access to education, and advocate for the implementation of effective support strategies for individuals dealing with dyslexia in their educational journeys.
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, plays a crucial role in addressing the developmental needs of Persons with Disabilities in the country. As part of its mission to create awareness about dyslexia, the department observes World Dyslexia Day through various affiliated institutions. These activities include webinars, physical seminars, awareness programs, marches, three-day workshops, poster exhibitions, and quiz competitions held at more than 30 locations across the nation.
By commemorating World Dyslexia Day, the DEPwD and associated institutions aim to not only raise awareness about dyslexia but also to underscore the importance of providing support, guidance, and equal opportunities to individuals facing the challenges of this learning disorder. Through education and understanding, society can help individuals with dyslexia thrive and achieve their full potential.
