Unprecedented Investment: £36 Billion to Transform Transportation Networks Across the UK

Last updated on October 10th, 2023 at 11:45 pm

The North West region of the United Kingdom is on the cusp of a transportation revolution as the government unveils the ambitious Network North plan. This far-reaching initiative, announced on October 4, 2023, seeks to bolster public transport networks, stimulate economic growth, and provide jobs across the region. With investments totaling billions of pounds, the plan promises to usher in faster, more efficient, and more sustainable transportation options for residents and businesses alike.

High-Speed Rail and Connectivity

A pivotal aspect of the Network North plan involves redirecting funds intended for a new track between the West Midlands and Manchester into roads, rail, and buses, prioritizing the enhancement of connectivity. The plan earmarks a substantial £12 billion for improving links between Liverpool and Manchester, ensuring the realization of the long-awaited Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) project.

Inter-City Connectivity

Over £3 billion will be allocated to enhance inter-city train services in the North West. Key projects include integrating Hull into Northern Powerhouse Rail, electrifying the Sheffield-Leeds line, and upgrading the Sheffield-Manchester route. The plan envisions a seamless network of fast, electric trains connecting the nine largest cities of the North several times an hour.

Bradford is set to receive a significant boost through a new through station and a line connecting to the NPR route near Huddersfield. These developments will result in a Bradford to Manchester journey time of around 30 minutes once the new high-speed line west of Marsden is operational, greatly improving accessibility and economic prospects.

Regional Investment

The Network North plan extends its reach to various city regions and rural areas in the North West. Key highlights include nearly £4 billion allocated to City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) to enhance connectivity, and a £2.5 billion fund dedicated to transforming local transport in 14 rural counties, smaller cities, and towns. These funds will facilitate infrastructure upgrades, electrification, and the development of integrated public transport networks.

Road Resurfacing and Congestion Relief

In response to concerns about road conditions, the plan earmarks £3.3 billion for a long-term road resurfacing fund in the North, targeting the repair of potholes and improving road quality. Additionally, over £500 million will support two major road schemes in the Manchester area, including a new link road between the M62 and M60.

Passengers can look forward to a £700 million bus funding package that will introduce more buses and frequent routes, including services to hospitals, industrial estates, and business parks. The popular £2 bus fare will also be extended, providing savings for passengers and promoting the use of public transport.

Empowering Local Areas

Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region are set to receive substantial funding boosts, with both regions benefiting from CRSTS2 budgets and additional funding sourced from HS2. These investments represent unprecedented commitments to local transport networks, providing opportunities for growth and development.

The Network North plan is poised to revolutionize the North West’s public transport systems and infrastructure. With substantial investments, it promises faster trains, increased capacity, and improved connectivity, which will not only benefit commuters but also stimulate economic growth and job creation across the region.
