Upendra, who is known mononymously, was born on 18 September 1968. He is an Indian actor, filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and politician who works primarily in Kannada cinema. Upendra has also worked on Telugu films. He started his film career as a writer and an assistant director with Kashinath, who is an actor and film director. Tharle Nan Maga (1992) was his first directorial venture. Upendra debuted as an actor in the mid-1990s with the film Om, followed by A. Upendra starred alongside Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon in his next film. He returned to directing after a decade of acting in Kannada and several Telugu films with the well-received Kannada film Super.
Upendra is known for his films that represent Indian politics and society. He joined Karnataka Pragnyavanta Janata Paksha in October 2017, but quit the party in March 2018 due to internal differences. He then formed another party, Uttama Prajakeeya Party (UPP), which is based on the principles of Prajakiya (citizen-centric administration). Upendra was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Angkor University in 2015.
