Ustad Zakir Hussain, one of India’s most celebrated tabla maestros and a true jewel of Indian music, has passed away at the age of 73. He breathed his last in a hospital in San Francisco on Monday after battling heart-related complications.
His family confirmed the news, stating that he died due to complications arising from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, following a two-week hospital stay.
A Peaceful Departure
Zakir Hussain’s sister, Khurshid Aulia, shared that he passed away “very peacefully” in the hospital. Known as the greatest tabla player of his generation, Hussain’s passing has left the music world in mourning, as his unparalleled mastery over the tabla has touched the lives of music lovers worldwide.
Legacy of a Maestro
Born on March 9, 1951, Zakir Hussain was the son of the legendary tabla virtuoso Ustad Alla Rakha. His musical journey began at an early age, under the tutelage of his father, and he went on to become an internationally recognized figure.
Zakir’s contribution to Indian classical music, especially his groundbreaking performances and collaborations with artists across genres, has earned him countless accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan.
