Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, AVSM, NM, stepped into the role of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff on January 4, 2024, succeeding a decorated career marked by leadership, strategic acumen, and a deep commitment to the security of the nation. His assumption of office began with a poignant tribute to fallen heroes as he laid a floral wreath at the National War Memorial.
A product of Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985. His expertise lies in Communication and Electronic Warfare, and he has served in various capacities on frontline warships, including Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. Notably, he commanded Indian Naval Ships Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul, showcasing his operational prowess.
Vice Dinesh K Tripathi’s career is adorned with key operational and staff appointments. He served as the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet in Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, and Principal Director of Network Centric Operations and Naval Plans in New Delhi. Rising through the ranks, he assumed the role of Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at NHQ and later as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet upon his promotion to Rear Admiral.
In June 2019, Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi was elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral and appointed as the Commandant of the prestigious Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. His tenure as the Director General of Naval Operations, from July 2020 to May 2021, witnessed a period of heightened maritime operations. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he ensured the Navy remained a ‘Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future-Proof Force.’
“From June 2021 to February 2023, the Vice Admiral served as the Chief of Personnel, contributing significantly to the human resources and leadership development within the Navy. His commitment to excellence is reflected in his graduation from the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, where he was honored with the Thimmaiya Medal. He also attended the Naval Higher Command Course and the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Islands, winning the prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize in 2007-08”.

Beyond his military commitments, he is a sports enthusiast with a keen interest in tennis, badminton, and cricket. Married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker, the couple has a son who is a practicing lawyer, married to Tanya, working in the policy-making domain.
