Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, AVSM, VSM, took the helm as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff on October 1, 2023, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career within the Indian Navy. With over 35 years of dedicated service, Vice Admiral Sobti brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this pivotal role.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988, Vice Admiral Sobti is a Navigation and Direction Specialist, possessing a deep understanding of the intricacies of naval operations. His career has been marked by a diverse array of Command and Staff appointments, both onshore and at sea.
Among his notable achievements, Vice Admiral Sobti has commanded various vessels, including INS Nishank, a Missile Boat, INS Kora, a Missile Corvette, and the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Kolkata. These command roles have showcased his leadership acumen and operational prowess.
In addition to his sea duties, Vice Admiral Sobti has served in crucial staff positions, including roles at the Directorate of Staff Requirements and Directorate of Personnel. Notably, he also represented the Indian Navy as the Naval Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow, further expanding his diplomatic and international engagement experience.
His promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral in 2019 marked another significant milestone in his career. He was appointed as the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor at the prestigious Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, followed by assuming command of the Eastern Fleet as Flag Officer Commanding.
In 2021, Vice Admiral Sobti reached the rank of Vice Admiral and was entrusted with the responsibility of Director General Project Seabird, a critical role in naval infrastructure development. This position paved the way for his current appointment as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff at NHQ MoD.
Vice Admiral Sobti’s exemplary service to the nation has been recognized with prestigious awards. In 2020, he was honored with the Vishisht Seva Medal, followed by the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022, both bestowed by the Hon’ble President of India.
Vice Admiral Sobti succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, who retired after an illustrious career spanning more than 38 years on September 30, 2023. During Vice Admiral Mahindru’s tenure as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, the Indian Navy achieved numerous significant milestones, expanding India’s maritime capabilities and strengthening strategic cooperation with friendly foreign nations.
