Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Criticizes Misinformed Remarks on CAA

Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar strongly denounced the misuse of sovereign platforms for misinformed commentary on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He reiterated that the CAA aims to provide relief to those persecuted on religious grounds in neighboring countries, emphasizing that no one is being deprived of citizenship despite contrary narratives.

Highlighting the CAA’s cutoff date of 2014 for citizenship eligibility, the Vice President emphasized that the act isn’t an invitation for new entrants but benefits those who have resided in the country for over a decade.

Speaking at the 2nd edition of the American Bar Association Spring Conference in Delhi, Vice President Dhankhar underscored India’s long history of offering refuge to persecuted religious communities. He rebuffed those attempting to lecture India while remaining ignorant of ground realities.

Asserting India’s robust democratic tradition from parliament to grassroots levels, Vice President Dhankhar objected to remarks made by some from sovereign platforms about Indian institutions. He emphasized India’s self-reliance in shaping its democratic ethos and urged youth to counter misinformation on social media.

Questioning those who spread pessimism despite India’s economic progress from the “fragile five” to the “big five,” Vice President Dhankhar lamented former officials’ negative narratives. He urged youth to engage in informed discourse to enlighten nations attempting to lecture India out of ignorance.

Shri R. Venkataramani, Attorney General of India, Solicitor General of India, Shri Tushar Mehta, Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), Ms. Pratibha Jain, Chair of the India Committee at ABA, and other dignitaries attended the event.
